SUMMER FITNESS HEATS UP
Tiebreakers--penalty shots and breakaways--assumed a big role as goalkeepers and field players closed out the July portion of the Summer Fitness and Technical Program at DyessPark. On penalties, keepers were advised not to "guess" where the ball was going but to read the kicker's approach and react to the shot. The keepers realized that they did quite well by intimidating the shooter with a strong ready position, and diving the right way resulted in errant shots or saves. One of the most memorable saves during the penalty shooting rotation was by Maddie Saucedo, smallest of the keepers participating, who held her ground and cleanly caught a blistering shot from Stephen Sorensen, who graciously apologized for shooting so hard, then realized Maddie had held it. The breakaways were briefly delayed when Coach Walker referred to them as NASL, rather than UIL (high school), tiebreakers. It's both, he explained to the uncertain faces of high school players. NASL, he explained, was North American Soccer League where the procedure was introduced in the late 70's (oops, asked one keeper, are we going to run 70's again?). No, no, the 1970's when the American pro league notoriously replaced the penalty shootout with breakaways from the 35-yard line (a line that no longer exists on a properly-lined pitch). Well, sighed Coach Walker, that's ancient history. . .so let's shoot. And they did, as the keepers learned to come off their line quickly to steal time and space from the shooter. Some are still shy about leaving the comfort of their line, but they are gradually becoming more adventuresome. It's all ball now in the final two weeks of the fitness sessions as each player prepares a final flourish of fitness, and improved technique. Those participating this summer are goalkeepers Aaron Austin, Kacie Paine, Braden Mann, Payton Salinas, Maddie Saucedo, Nate Dunkley, Kaitrin Miller, Kaylee Barrett, and Kenzie Peterson; field players Savannah Mallon, Jessica Lykins, Madeline Rockey, Stephen Sorensen, Clark Kauffman, Michaela Sabrsula, Kelly Boucher, Olivia Forcey, Kylie Austin, Kacie Cardenas, Hannah Saucedo, Ashley Coil, Kristen Poth, Haley Otts, Taylor Crispi; Assisting: Jonathan Kauffman, Patty Walrath, John Kowalzyck. Guests: Jimmy Dittoe, Tanner King, Sabrina Pasier, Brenden Kowalski, Rachel Austin, Katie Pierce, and Nick Vagi.

WHEN I GET SCORED ON. . .
What do you do when a goal is scored against you? Keeper! readers were asked to respond with a statement of 25 words or less to be eligible for a gift certificate drawing--prize is $25 of whatever you request. Only three responded this time, so a drawing of the three will be held after Aug. 1. Here are the replies (all good ones!):
From Jonathan Kauffman (Junior goalkeeper at Central Baptist University):
"Composure is key after being scored on, and then reflecting on how it happened and what you can do next time to save it."
From Kaitrin Miller (Challenge) :
"I pick up a piece of grass and think about what I needed to do and then throw it away like it never happened, then keep playing."
From Maddie Saucedo (U12 Dynamos):
"I get the ball out of the net and try my hardest not to be upset and let my team down and try to block the next shots that they take at me."

WHITE KNUCKLES
(reprinted from the Coaches Memo)
Why do I feel a burst of pride whenever a goalkeeper maneuvers the family automobile into a parking space at DyessPark upon arrival for training? The other day it was Kacie Paine, the surehanded netminder from Langham Creek HS and longtime Keeper! Club member, piloting her Mom's SUV slowly between the lines, like a sleek boat docking. Patti and Kacie emerged from the vehicle smiling, Mom admitting she was a bit white-knuckled. Recalls years ago when goalkeeper Josh Myers made his first trip as driver to Dyess. When he parked, his dad, Darrell, opened the passenger side door, put his feet on the ground, stood up, and said to the sky, "Thank you!" From the driver's side came a confident "That's okay, Dad, any time." Darrell, still looking to the heavens, responded: "I wasn't speaking to you, Josh."--Jim Walker

SAILOR ON BOARD
Summer Fitness participants were honored by the presence of Seaman Third Class Tanner King of the U. S. Navy at the July 17 and July 19 sessions. Tanner, a former Keeper Club trainee who has been in the Navy for three years, was on leave from his ship, the USS San Antonio, docked in Norfolk, Virginia. He is planning to try out for the U. S. Navy soccer team and wanted touches on the ball. Tanner impressed keepers with his fitness and diligence during keeperwork. Good luck, Tanner, and we all thank you for your service.

KEEPERTALK
Fitter than fit Jonathan Kauffman tied a long-standing summer record in running the 70s July 24 when he raced down the daunting 20-70-20 course a dozen times with a jogging recovery return on each. Jonathan equaled the mark set by Brandon Renken in the mid-1990s, a towering tribute to both for strong wills and stronger lungs. . .The "Monday Warriors" drawing for June was won by Jessica Lykins (U17 Dynamos and Cy-Wood HS) and for July by Jonathan Kauffman. All players who attended summer fitness sessions at DyessPark had their names, one for every time they attended, dropped into a cone. Each won a $25 gift card to Soccer-4-All. . .Among vacation spots of summer fitness attendees: Delaney Reynolds shuffled off to Buffalo, Sabrina Pasier scoped Chicago, Kyra visited the McLeod clan in Aberdeen, Scotland, and environs, Kenzie Peterson swam and parasailed in Florida, Nate Dunkley attended camp at Duke University, Kaylee Barrett visited the University of Florida, and Tim Tebow's statue. . .Izzy Tullier reported she was visiting Cape Cod, so Coach Jim gave her an assignment--spell "Massachusetts" for him when she returns. She's already practicing, Mom reported. . .After attending, and doing well, at summer fitness training with "the big guys" July 19, Colby McAlister spent time in Maine, and wasn't asked to spell it. . .High fives and many thanks to Patty Walrath, Jonathan Kauffman, and John Kowalczyk for their valuable assistance at summer fitness sessions. Jonathan was present most every session and invaluable in keeping things running smoothly. Patty and Stix blended well with Jonathan to produce a quality experience for an array of ages and training needs. Patty, who will be a junior goalkeeper at HoustonBaptistUniversity, shared her college soccer experiences at the end of training July 30. Michael Sicola, goalkeeper coach for St. Thomas HS and a Keeper Club alumnus, appeared at the July 31 session and shared tips with the keepers. . .A voice from the past: Jonathan Rumfield, a Dynamos alumnus and a regular at keeper training for a long time, emails that his southern gospel quartet (he's a baritone) at Southwestern Assemblies of God University recently returned from a Nashville recording session for two albums, one a Christmas CD. A senior who graduates in December, Jono and the "Harvesters" are on the road every weekend during school and often in summer. Jono played soccer at Tomball HS as a midfielder but his senior season was pressed into service as a keeper when the regular netminder was injured. He recalls using all the warmup drills he learned at Keeper Club to prepare and performed well enough in his team's final five games to be selected second team all-district. . .Take time to join soccer talk (713-212-5790) with Glenn Davis and other soccer fans on AM Radio 790 Mondays on "Dynamos All Access," 8-10pm, and "Soccer Matters" 8-9pm Tuesdays; they can be accessed also on IHEART radio and the podcasts go up at Sports790.com and on ITUNES. . .Please send items of interest for Keeper! or KeeperTalk, to jwalker332@aol.com.

CANNON FIRE
(Valuable tips on how to use your free time in summer from veteran Major League Soccer goalkeeper Joe Cannon, writing in his blog "Goalkeeping 101 and Beyond.")
"This summer try to work on things you normally can't. If you need to improve your strength in jumping, then do some plyometric exercises to get your spring a little bit better. If your footwork needs some work, then get out and do some footwork drills. If you simply need to get better, call some older players who need a goalkeeper to shoot on and let them know you're available. It is not the time to play Call of Duty and socialize with friends online. Trust me, I have enough 20 and 30 year old friends who do that to this day. It is time to set your goals and go after them. 'If not now, then when? If not you, then who?'--Take responsibility for your goals and dreams and get out there to make them happen. Summer is a great excuse for your competitors to relax and get comfortable in their free time. For the ones who are serious about achieving their goals, the time is NOW. While other people are daydreaming, let's be proactive in trying to make ours come true."--Joe Cannon

QUOTABLE
Opportunity is like the soccer ball - the hardest thing to obtain and possess, but the easiest thing to lose.--David Benner, former professional goalkeeper and one of the inspirations for the Keeper! Club, a frequent visitor to our camps, now training keepers in the Dallas area.

TIP OF THE MONTH
More wisdom from David Benner:
1. Perfect within our range. Learn technique, practice technique, focus on technique
2. Any ball that drops, you go with it
3. If you're already on the ground, arise and collect the ball
4. Don't cheat yourself...if you make a mistake, you correct it

KEEPING SECRETS
Constructive distribution requires composure. How many times, immediately following the excitement of the save, does the keeper distribute the ball poorly? Emotions must be kept under control, so that the decision-making process may be carried out properly. On short ball distributions, the goalkeeper should support their receivers. On handling high balls, it is advantageous to distribute to the weak side. --Goalkeeper guru Dan Gaspar
