KEEPER! CAMP IN AUGUST
For loads of fitness and technique work for boys and girls nine years old through 18, don't miss the Keeper! Club's Summer Goalkeeper Camp at DyessPark August 16-18. Lots of fun, too, while learning to lift your level as a goalkeeper. For Keeper! Club members, the 2012 Goalkeeper Camp is free if you sign up and pay for the Dynamos' Select Camp, which runs August 13 through August 17. For the price of the Select Camp, you can attend three days of Select and three days with the goalkeepers. For members who are not attending Select Camp, there's a $15 discount off the $125 camp fee. Camp hours are 5pm to 8pm on Thursday and Friday evenings, and 9am until noon on Saturday, capped off with a Pizza and Powerade lunch on Saturday. Camp Director Jim Walker will announce his staff of guest instructors later this month. You can register at www.dynamossoccer.com. . .click on "Summer Camps," then "Registration." If you have questions about the camp, email jwalker332@aol.com, or call 281-217-1612.

HAVING A BALL AT FITNESS
Asking for that "little more" he expected from Summer Fitness and Technical goalkeepers and field players at DyessPark, Coach Walker pleaded: "We're working hard, but still missing the energy I'm looking for. From where do we get that energy?" An alert trainee cracked up the group by replying: "Red Bull!"
As the Summer Fitness and Technical Program cruised into its third week June 25, there was good news and bad news for participants, the majority of whom are candidates for high school and college teams. The good news: they would bring, and use, the ball during the final week of June. The bad news: still on the menu was the running the 70s , those nasty unrelenting sprints that produce sweaty brows and burning lungs. For the uninformed, the first two weeks of the program was all fitness work without the ball (except for a few approved glimpses to brighten the cooldown periods). The 70s consist of a series of 120-yard romps, 70 yards of which is sprinted, not much adored. With use of the ball, goalkeepers will get special attention during July workouts, two of which (July 19 and July 30) will be open for Keeper Club regulars and junior keepers to attend.

HOW DO YOU HANDLE GOALS?
Here's an opportunity for goalkeeper readers of Keeper! to win a $25 gift certificate of your choice, just for replying to the following question: What do you do when a goal is scored against you? Your statement, in 25 words or less, should be emailed to JWalker332@aol.com before August 1. With your entry, you give permission for the statements to be published in upcoming issues of Keeper! and your name will be placed in a drawing for the gift certificate, which will be presented in August. Good luck!

LOOKING BACK
A few items from past issues of Keeper!:
March, 2006--For a small group of goalkeepers, it seemed a good way to spend evenings during Spring Break. For Jonathan Kauffman, it was profitable, too, since he won the drawing for a $25 gift certificate to Soccer-4-All. Attending were Mari Edwards, Dustin Marsh, Jeremish Sutton, Amber Baker, Seth Sojka, and Patrick Pratt and assisting were Kevin Atnip and Troi Jorgensen.
September, 2010--Learning that what goes around comes all the way back around, the under-13 Dynamos Gold of Coach James Beaty marched off with the Austin Labor Day Cup championship last weekend. After losing a week before to Texans 98 East, 1-0, the Dynamos found themselves in the title game face-to-face with the same foe. This time it was another battle royal, the teams duking it out in a splendidly-played zero-zero standoff, followed by a dramatic PK shootout (4-3) victory for the Dynamos, thanks to the heroics of goalkeeper Nate Dunkley. With a mighty dive, Nate turned away the final well-taken Texans attempt. "Nate put his heart into the dive, and came up big with steady hands to push the kick wide," said the elated coach. "A climactic finish to an incredible weekend of Dynamos soccer."

KEEPERTALK
Definitely a proliferation of names beginning with the letter "K" attending summer fitness camp! Consider Kacie (two of them), Kaylee, Kelly, Kenzie, Kaitrin, Kristen, Kylie, Kyra, and. . .Clark. Well, okay, not Clark, but it sounds like "K." And his last name is Kauffman. It prompted Coach Walker to exKlaim: "So many K's around here, I can't think!". . .A bout with pneumonia and a broken finger postponed Kaylee Barrett from starting her normal summer attendance at DyessPark conditioning sessions until June 28. Also unable to begin was the previously ever-present Sabrina Pasier, nursing a severely sprained ankle. . .Goalkeeper Isai Delacruz and his under-17 Dynamos teammates will be selling fireworks for Independence Day as a team fundraiser June 29-July 4 at a TNT Fireworks stand at 13742 North Eldridge Parkway (in front of the WalMart Neighborhood Market). There's a coupon worth $10 off your purchase at www.tntfireworks.com. . .Keeper! Club's Steven Franke made quite an impression on instructors, including the Dynamos' Roland Sikinger, at Texas A&M camp in mid-June. Then Steven was off to Florida for a week's vacation. . .Jonathan Kauffman, eyeing the starting keeper's assignment at Central Baptist University in the fall, often runs the Summer Fitness Program warmup lap wearing a 20-pound vest, and while other attendees run the 70s, he's knocking down 240s. The lad is in shape, and doing a bangup job as an assistant. . .Thanks to all who participated in the surprise birthday party for Coach Walker at the DyessPark gazebo after fitness training June 28. The chocolate cake by Alexa, cupcakes by Kaitrin, and cookies by Kaylee were delicious, and the Happy Birthday song by everybody was special, as was the card, which read: "Some Birthday Advice from All of Us--You'd better hang on to this card. . .some of our autographs could be valuable someday!" Coach Walker's response: "I have news for you--all of these autographs are already valuable!". . .Kenzie Peterson, vacationing in Florida, posted photos of two more of her sporting endeavors--swimming and boating. The girl does it all--she's already shown interest in soccer, basketball, pole vaulting, and beach volleyball. . .HoustonBaptistUniversity goalkeeper. and Keeper! Club alumnus Patty Walrath put in an hourlong intense workout before fitness training June 28, then remained to assist with the goalkeepers. Patty stepped into a starting role late in the season for the Huskies last fall, winning five of her six starts, including three shutouts. . .Join soccer talk (713-212-5790) with Glenn Davis and other soccer fans on AM Radio 790 Mondays on "Dynamos All Access," 8-10pm, and "Soccer Matters" 8-9pm Tuesdays; they can be accessed also on IHEART radio and the podcasts go up at Sports790.com and on ITUNES. . .Please send items of interest for Keeper! or KeeperTalk, to jwalker332@aol.com.

NOTE TO DRIVERS--CAUTION!
A reminder to parents and keepers who drive: there are two stop signs on the way to the soccer complex at Dyess Park. . .please do not sail through them, even if there is little other traffic at the park. Keepers, please remind parents, or other drivers, to stop at both signs. If you or your driver fails to stop, you may be asked to leave the park, or if a constable is present, you could be ticketed. Some cars still travel too fast on the roads bordering fields 1, 2, 3, and 4; take special care in these areas when the park is crowded. . .soccer balls are flying, and players are constantly crossing the road to fetch a ball or go to the restroom. Please slow down, and use extreme caution.

STAYING COOL IS COOL
"Composure? That's how you handle the downs because you're going to get 'downs' as a goalkeeper," says former Tottenham Hotspur, Arsenal, and Northern Ireland keeper Bobby Clark. "Anybody can handle the 'ups.' but it's the real mark of a player in any sport to handle the disappointments: the lost games, the goals allowed. That's a true mark of a player."

QUOTABLE
“Being fit will keep you mentally sharp and people forget that.--Former English international goalkeeper Peter Shilton

TIP OF THE MONTH
Stay mentally in the game. Don't permit your mind to stray while play is at the other end. One method is to play every touch of the ball as it moves about the field. This will assure that you are in proper position when it is near goal and there is threat of a shot. Block out what spectators may be saying to you, what other people think of your play, or what is happening on the next field or in the parking lot. When you find yourself thinking about these things, recognize it, and bring your focus back to the field in front of you.

KEEPING SECRETS
Safest storage place for your gloves is a glove wallet or small bag to protect them from dust and sunlight. Wash gloves regularly, while wearing them, in luke warm water with a mild detergent. Do not wash in a washing machine or dry in a dryer. For surest cleanliness, turn them inside out and wash them again. Rinse and air dry them in a shaded area. Do not expose to direct sunlight, heat sources, or lighting.  It causes them to be brittle and lessens the life expectancy. -- Dan Gaspar, Star Goalkeeper Academy.
Just say 'NO' to goals!
