CAMPERS SHOW COURAGE
For the first time in its almost 20-year history, the Keeper's Club's Summer Goalkeeper Camp collided with a flurry of pre-season tournaments on Saturday, which is traditionally Pizza and Powerade Day of the three-day event. This year there was plenty of Locatelli's pizza and jars of Powerade to go around because many of the campers were off to Burroughs Park, Conroe and The Woodlands to appear in tournaments. Only Mia Posey was able to return for lunch and bid farewell to fellow campers after her tournament game. The camp kicked off on a hot and muggy Thursday evening with 25 keepers pulling on gloves and going to work with Heather Koudelka, Michael Sicola and Coach Walker. Veteran instructor Brandon Renken and young Austin Benner were on hand to join Michael the next two days as Dr. Heather had other commitments. Camp Director Jim declared he was especially pleased with the performance of campers when they were asked to face the Select Camp's best penalty shooters an hour after starting the keeper camp. "Without much preparation, they stepped in against the camp's best shooters and while the shot takers put many away, as they were supposed to, the keepers rarely made the mistake of guessing and diving the wrong way," he said. "In fact, in several cases the keeper made the correct decision and either could not quite reach the ball or made errors in technique that caused them to miss the save. Soon, they will be taller and quicker and they will be make those saves, because they make the effort and their technique will be better." Coaches Koudelka, Renken and Sicola and Assistant Austin gave high marks to the campers for their efforts despite steamy heat. Special thanks to Maison's family for delivering the pizza and to Alysson's family for providing paper products for the post-camp lunch. Participating in Goalkeeper Camp: Madison Wahl, Maison Bell, Chelsea Aldrich, Isabelle Tullier, Colby McAlister, Kelly Hines, Ethan Rimbey, Isea Gonzalez, Alysson Crouch, Maddie Saucedo, Coleman Overbey, Alex Easley, Mia Posey, Marissa Mills, Payton Salinas, Joseph Majeski, Steven Franke, Brady Stonebraker, Jason Marsh, Kacie Paine, Nate Dunkley, Kennedy McGill, Kaylee Barrett, Chris Daves, Teah Wilson, Cameron Rieth, Kodi Garcia, Isai delaCruz.

CALVIN MEETS TONY
From former Keeper Club member Calvin Anderson, who visited WashingtonState this summer for a family reunion: "We went to the Chelsea vs Seattle Sounders game in Seattle. They had several Chelsea booths around the gates of the stadium. Allstate Insurance had a table setup to come and meet Tony Meola (former U. S. National Team and Major League Soccer keeper) and get his autograph and picture. He was a very nice man to sit and talk to briefly and seems like a really good guy. Several people in line asked who he was but when told he had been a goalkeeper for the USA team the line started to grow. Amazing how the sport has grown!" Calvin will be the varsity keeper at Cy-Ranch HS, but meanwhile is busy kicking field goals and punting for the varsity football team. He's also the school's student council president. Calvin's brother Philip, a Dynamos alum star, is a graduate assistant coach for the SchreinerUniversity men's team.

oHOW TO BE A REALLY BAD KEEPER
The truly bad goalkeeper can appear spectacular and assured even at his most inept. See how he pounces on the poorly hit shot as it crawls apologetically toward him; and how he disdainfully mocks the forty-yard drive as it whistles past him into the top corner. In the case of the onrushing forward, it's advisable to either leave him plenty of the goal to shoot at, or let him past and trip him up from behind. It's essential for the bad goalkeeper to command his area: to instill panic, where there is none; to shout meaningless conflicting instructions to all and sundry; and to blame everyone else when the ball finally hits the net. It's also his job to badly organize defensive walls so as to provide spectacularly successful free kicks.--Eurosport.

KEEPERTALK
When it was learned Junior Keeper Izzy Tullier was vacationing in Massachusetts this summer, she received a message from the Keeper! Club: your assignment is to spell "Massachusetts" when you return. Sure enough, first day of the Summer Goalkeeper Camp, Izzy bounded onto the gazebo stage, interrupted all proceedings and completed her assignment perfectly. Colby McAlister didn't get a spelling assignment--he vacationed in Maine. . .Jonathan Kauffman, who assisted so ably during the Keeper Club's Summer Fitness Program, suffered his first loss after picking up two victories in his first three starts as the keeper for Central Baptist College in Conway, Arkansas. The Mustangs beat Bacone College, 3-1, in Muskogee, Oklahoma, and TexasCollege, 7-2, in Tyler, Texas, then lost to St. Gregory's University, 2-1, in Shawnee, Okla., on an overtime goal.

BIGGEST THRILL OF ALL
Flying is the second greatest thrill known to goalkeepers. Landing is first.
QUOTABLE
When you take a risk and step out of the norm, you run the risk and sometimes you fail. But you only fail if you give up. -- J Peterman
TIP OF THE MONTH
On a breakaway situation, whenever the ball is at the attacker's feet, the keeper should remain on his or her feet, in the set position. Do not go down to win the ball until the attacking player plays the ball away. If the attacker is 20 yards away, advancing with the ball, the keeper should advance when the ball is touched forward, but get set again each time the attacker prepares for the next touch. What may seem a simple thing, being patient and not going down too soon, is a big problem for young keepers, who often slide forward or get caught between steps when the attacker strikes the ball. Learning the proper stance, and when to use it, enables the keeper to concentrate better, move quicker, and dive when necessary.

KEEPING SECRETS
Do not stand behind the wall when defending direct free kicks within striking distance. The wall should provide coverage of the near post while you position yourself to see the ball while covering the far post area. You are responsible for indicating how many players you want in the wall. Now you must be on the alert for a ball chipped over or curving around the wall.
