With Jim Walker, there will be tips on preparing goalkeepers for games and ways for keepers of all ages to practice fundamentals. Coaches and parents are invited to bring one or more goalkeepers and join in the activities. It’s a great opportunity to learn effective ways to warm up keepers prior to games, discuss how to deal with keeper successes and failures, and help them grow in the position. Please register for this free workshop by emailing JWalker332@aol.comif you plan to attend, with names and ages of keepers you will bring.

OVERHEARD AT KEEPER CLUB
Keeper: "How many holes in this goal net?"
Coach: "Well, I don’t rightly know."
Keeper: "What would a referee do to me if I put chewing gum in his whistle?"
Coach: "Not sure"
Keeper: "Why is the sky blue?"
Coach: "Can’t answer that one, keep."
Keeper: "Coach, do you mind me asking all these questions?"
Coach: "Of course not. If you don't ask questions, you'll never learn anything!"

KEEPERTALK
Welcome to new members Carl Hallgren, Megan McAfee, Grace Seloover, and Georgia Williams. . .Hats off to Keeper Club alumni serving in the military; thank you for your service, Jacob Fowler, Carolyn Kenaley, and Mya Morrison. . .Thanks to Keeper Club alums Brandon Renken, Heather Koudelka, and Michael Sicola for their superb direction of the Summer Goalkeeper Camp, which went smoothly despite a stormy Friday interruption and a full Saturday of tournaments. . .Fall keeper training kicked off with hard work and fun for those attending. A fast-paced shot-stopping session in the Aug. 19 opener for Ethan Urrutia, Ansley Blake, Steven Franke, Izel Hernandez, Maddie Saucedo, Payton Salinas, Aly Crouch, and Aaron Austin, concluded with a wide-ranging game of keeper golf over an otherwise empty Dyess Park;and with Roli the Goalie on Thursday, Brady Stonebraker, Cameron Rieth, Marissa Mills, Kacie Paine, Izzy Tullier, and newcomer Jorge Gonzalez received lots of technical handling, followed by a shot-stopping game called circus, circus. . .In addition to soccer, Braden (Striker) Mann kicks for his high school football team. Although the Cy-Fair freshman missed his U17 Dynamos team’s opening tournament, the Disney Showcase in Orlando over Labor Day weekend due to pre-season grid practice, Striker returns to defend the nets for the state champion (and Region 3 finalist) U17 Dynamos this fall season. . . During the summer, in addition to attending the fitness program at Dyess Park, Isobel Herrod helped her mom at business conventions in Chicago and Los Angeles. . .Ever-active Izzy Tullier of the U11 Dynamos was slowed while on vacation in Massachusetts, spending a few days in Children's Hospital in Boston because of an asthma attack, from which she has recovered nicely.  Izzy made good on her promise to spell "Connecticut" upon her return for Keeper Camp. A year ago, her assignment was to spell "Massachusetts" and she came through with flying colors, bursting into the gazebo at Keeper Camp with a rapid-fire spelling of the Bay State. . .Kacie Paine has decided not to play her final season of club soccer, but concentrate on her senior year as the starter at Langham CreekHS, so will continue training with the Keeper Club and helping out the trainers when possible. . .Dynamos alum Patty Walrath went 90 minutes in goal only to lose a heartbreaker as HoustonBaptistUniversity dropped a 1-0 decision to NorthTexasState last weekend. Patty, a junior who has seen limited action with the Huskies but continues to be ready when needed, came through with six saves. North Texas outshot HBU, 23-15, with a 4-1 advantage in corner kicks. HBU (0-2-0) plays its home opener against TexasChristianUniversity Sunday, Sept. 1, at 7pm. . .Payton Salinas won the $25 gift card to Soccer-4-All for her answer to the question “At what age did U. S. National Team goalkeeper Nick Rimando say he started his career in the nets?” Payton emailed “10” and her name was drawn. This month’s question (answer elsewhere in this newsletter): Jon Busch says good things come to you if you are willing to do what? Email the answer to jwalker332@aol.com to be entered in a drawing of those with correct replies to determine the award of a $25 gift card for whatever the winner wants!. .Goalkeepers, coaches, and parents are urged to share photos and items of interest for possible use in Keeper! and KeeperTalk--Simply email to jwalker332@aol.com.

BIGGEST SAVE!
When semi-pro goalkeeper Ben Scott was sent off with a red card last week, there was no time for him to rage or sul. The Stocksbridge, England, netminder had a more important save to make, such as someone's life. After being red-carded for a dangerous high tackle minutes before the end of Stockbridge's match at King's Lynn Town FC, a young girl ran past him looking for help for a man in his 70s who had collapsed in the crowd. Scott's day job? He's a staff nurse at Doncaster Royal infirmary, so he quickly took a detour from his stroll to the locker room and made his way to the man. Working together with members of the on-site ambulance crew, Scott said they were able to use a defibrillator to give the collapsed fan a shock, helping his heart return to normal rhythm. It was, Scott said, the biggest save of his life.--BBC
QUOTABLE
“If you want it bad enough and are willing to work harder than anyone else good things come! If I listened to the coaches that told me I was too small I wouldn't have made it past club soccer.”—Jon Busch, 5-10 goalkeeper for the San Jose Earthquakes, 11-year veteran in Major League Soccer

TIP OF THE MONTH
Act as if what you do makes a difference. It does.--William James

KEEPING SECRETS
Keeper Club trainees are encouraged to become “perfect within their range.“ That means reaching the point through repetitions of techniques where they are executing the simple save, making decisions that enable them to collect the ball in the most efficient manner possible, and putting forth effort to make all basic saves with proper technique. The young keeper asks: “Perfect?”   Yes, “perfect” is the reply. Don’t drop the easy ones--handle simple balls with focus, confidence and poise. Through hard work at training and daily practice, slowly but steadily extend your range and take on more advanced techniques, learning to make split-second decisions on the difficult shots.
