SUMMER TRAINING HOTAND HEAVY
Go the extra mile—it is rarely crowded.
Stephen Sorensen and Kacie Paine, both former Dynamos players looking to play in college after graduation next year, are the fittest of fit at this year’s Summer Fitness and Technical Program sessions and both have run the extra mile and found it uncrowded. Other teenaged players preparing for high school, club or college soccer include Monique Hutcheson (who will be a SchreinerUniversity freshman), Taylor Hutcheson, Izel Hernandez, Megan Cybul, Kaylee Barrett, Aaron Bridges, Nicolas Lloyd, Karinna Lara, Kaitrin Miller, Omar Hernandez, and Kenny Grau. The old adage “no pain, no gain” has become “no pain, all gain” in the minds of this year’s boys and girls preparing for upcoming seasons, whether it be club, high school, or college. The heat took its toll at times, but these players handled it in stride, getting a quick drink, ice massage, or rest before returning to the tasks at hand. “This is a bit younger group than in past years,” said Coach Walker, “but the focus and sticktuitiveness each of the keepers and field players has shown has been impressive.” Only three sessions remain—Aug. 1, Aug. 6, and Aug. 8—and plans call for fast-paced small-sided games to put the summer-long conditioning to the test.

KEEPERTALK
Welcome to new member Ansley Blake. . .Keeper Club alumnus Patty Walrath, now a keeper at HoustonBaptistUniversity, visited July 18 and imparted keeper tips and delivered inspiring words to the fitness group. . .A ton of thanks to Troy Hutcheson for his assistance at Summer Fitness and Technical Program sessions. Not only did he accompany the 20-some participants on their mile warmup runs, but helped organize other activities and lent encouragement and tips along the way. Also thanks to the Hinzes and Millers, and Herrods, for their help. . .Dynamos Select Committee chairman Joe B. Napier dropped by fitness training on July 25 and delivered a cooler of Gatorade, most welcome on another of the near-100 degree days. . .Here’s a note of thanks to the young drivers who traverse the avenues of beautiful downtown Dyess Park for summer training. Your careful driving is noted and appreciated. Just remember to continue that cautious and alert navigating when you hit the busy streets outside the gates. . .Germany captured its sixth straight European Women's Championship title with a 1-0 win over Norway July 28 before a tournament record crowd of 41,301 in Stockholm. Anja Mittag had the game's lone goal, but the German hero was Nadine Angerer, the oldest player on the German team at the age of 34, who saved penalty kicks by Trine Ronning and Solveig Gulbrandsen. Earlier in the UEFA playoffs, goalkeeper Stina Petersen also saved two penalties, hers in a span of 18 minutes, to help Denmark hold host Sweden to a 1-1 draw in Gothenburg before a sell-out crowd of 16,128 in Gothenburg. . .Izzy Tullier’s name was drawn by senior goalkeeper Kacie Paine as the July winner of a $25 gift card for Soccer-4-All for her reply “West Soccer Club” as the previous name of the Cy-Fair Youth Soccer Club. This month’s secret word, or number, (hidden somewhere within this newsletter): At what age did U. S. National Team goalkeeper Nick Rimando say he started his career in the nets? Email answer to jwalker332@aol.com. A drawing will be held of those with correct replies to determine the winner. . .Goalkeepers, coaches, and parents are urged to share photos and items of interest for possible use in Keeper! and KeeperTalk--Simply email to jwalker332@aol.com.

LOOKING BACK
July, 1992—In a time when he was the Cy-Fair Youth Soccer Club’s Director of Training, Jim Walker took several goalkeepers to BearCreekPark for a clinic presented by Mary Harvey, keeper for the World Champion U. S. Women’s national team. Afterward, Mary signed a poster of herself to hang in the club office, at that time located in the First Interstate (now Wells Fargo) bank building on Jones Road. It read: “To the Cy-Fair Youth Soccer Club—best of luck in the coming season,” signed “Mary Harvey.” The poster was framed, and had a place of honor for many years in the club office. Wonder where it is now? More importantly, where is Mary Harvey now? Last we heard, she was involved in efforts to promote women's soccer in the U. S. and worldwide, after serving on US Soccer's Board of Directors for 12 years and on the U. S. Olympic Committee.

NICK STARTED YOUNG
Nick Rimando, the 33-year-old goalkeeper for RealSaltLake now in his 14th Major League Soccer season, started his career at age 10 when his team’s regular keeper suffered an injury. “I don’t remember if we won or lost the game,” Rimando says. “I must have done pretty well because my coach kept me at goalkeeper. What I do remember is I fell in love with the position that day. I got to wear a different color jersey and use my hands-–and that made me feel special.” Rimando started playing competitively with Upland Celtic but didn’t have much training early on. “The father of a teammate I car-pooled with had been a hockey player,” Rimando remembers. “He’d teach me stuff about playing angles that he knew from hockey. Later on, I went to goalkeeper camps.” With Alta Loma Arsenal, he played alongside future national team captain Carlos Bocanegra. But when then-UCLA coach Sigi Schmid first scouted him at a high school game, Rimando was playing forward. “Sigi got a laugh out of that,” said Rimando. “But he came back to see me with my club, where I played goalkeeper.” Rimando went pro after his junior season at UCLA.Mike Woitalla, Soccer America’s Youth Soccer Insider.

QUOTABLE
“Discipline is the bridge between goals and accomplishment.”Jim Rohn

TIP OF THE MONTH
Once the goalkeeper has gained a good level of skill he needs to dedicate more time to the psychological side of the game. This is important for all soccer players but especially so for anyone playing in this position. Playing in goal requires a great deal of mental strength, will power, patience, consistency, good concentration, and awareness.—Lawrence Ruiz, The Spanish Goalkeeping Bible.

KEEPING SECRETS
When it comes to goalkeepers, it is difficult to find meaningful statistics. Shots saved vs. shots on goal is one obvious one, but it doesn’t always tell how effective a goalkeeper really is. The best keepers keep their defense in shape and are well positioned themselves, so the opportunity for a shot never even presents itself.—Goalkeeper guru Tony DiCicco
~Just say NO! to goals!~
