Workshop for coaches, parents
BRING YOUR OWN KEEPER
Goalkeepers sometimes are called "The Lonely Breed" and it's true they often are responsible for their own game preparation. So it usually seems comforting for them to gather every so often and see that others share their successes and problems, and seek to improve at the position. Fifteen netminders, ages nine to 15, along with their coaches and/or parents, appeared for another renewal of BYOK (Bring Your Own Keeper) Sunday, February 23, at DyessPark. Workshop coordinator Jim Walker reminded the adults present that goalkeepers needed to be "loved, not yelled at," also noted that the workshop would be successful if each keeper went away with at least one piece of information that helped them become better at their position. Hopefully this transpired, but if not, each keeper at least walked away with something tangible--a cold drink, pair of Puma shoestrings, a player card, and several won new soccer balls in a clinic-ending drawing. Current Keeper Club member Steven Franke served as assistant, warming up the keepers and demonstrating methods of saving. Attending were: Evan Alaniz, Eli Alaniz, Elle LeBlanc, Timothy McLeod, Izel Hernandez, Jared McDonald, Jeremy Brown, Brianna Shaffer, Denise Shaffer, Ashlyn Brewer, Austin Fernandes, Tyler Crumpton, Will Boucher, Nick Modeste, and Milton Modeste.

HATS OFF TO VOLUNTEERS!
Many thanks to players, parents, and coaches who volunteered to assist in operation of the recent Dynamos Puma Cup tournament. PERFECT TRAINING NIGHT
Roland Sikinger, reporting on his February 25 training session:
"The winds were howlin' at 40 mph, wind chill in the 30's, making it hard to stand up, and to keep your eyes open. Perfect for keeper training! The four brave souls who trudged across the Dyess Tundra were Isea, Marissa,Steven, and Izel." adding that he kept it "short and sweet--keeping them moving was the key with a lot of quick footwork combined with technical handling, finishing with defending a three-sided goal." Remember, Rolie the Goalie was trying to stay warm, too!

KEEPERTALK
Welcome to new members Izel Hernandez and Tyler Crumpton. . .Daylight Saving Time begins March 10--spring forward an hour. . .The Houston Rockets may want Aly Crouch to sing the National Anthem before more games. The U12 Dynamos Gold keeper participated with fellow Cinco Ranch Junior High School students prior to the Rockets game Feb. 5, a rousing 142-109 victory over the Golden State Warriors. . .Payton Salinas took time out from basketball season at Aragon Elementary School to go the distance in goal in three Puma Cup matches for her team, the Cy-Fair Fire, facing a heavy barrage in two ties and a loss, giving up only three goals. The next weekend, she saw Kobe Bryant, Lebron James, Blake Griffin, and Kevin Durant during NBA All-Star Game weekend. On Feb. 23, Payton hooked up in a back-and-forth battle with the U13 Dynamos, with Keeper Club colleague Marissa Mills playing tough in the opposing goal, the Fire winning on a goal in the final minutes. Busy girl!. . .Another busy one is Kenzie Peterson, returning to Keeper Club training after a season as a pole vaulter at Tomball's Willow Wood Junior High. . .Aly Crouch spun a shutout in the U12 Dynamos Gold's 2-0 victory over the bracket's top team in the fall, Express Navy. . .Thanks again to Steven Franke for his awesome assistance at the BYOK workshop Feb. 17. . .Thanks, too, to Isobel Herrod for staying overtime to help out with Junior Keepers not once but several times in February. . .Youngest Junior Keeper club member is Alex Stabell, nephew of former longtime Cy-Fair Youth Soccer Club board member and Dynamos coach Walt Stabell. Alex is only six, but wants to get a head start on learning the keeper position. . .Longtime Dynamos player, and for a time a Keeper Club member, Kacie Cardenas, a Jackie Robinson Scholar and freshman at Baylor University, is attending a five-day mentorship conference in New York City Feb. 28-March 5, sponsored by the Jackie Robinson Foundation. . .Goalkeepers, coaches, and parents are urged to share photos and items of interest for use in Keeper! and KeeperTalk--Simply email to jwalker332@aol.com.

KEEPER AND THE TRESPASSER
A bizarre scene occurred in a second-division English League match early in January when Wycombe Wanderers' goalkeeper Jordan Archer was preparing to take a goal kick in stoppage time against host Gillingham. Wycombe led, 1-0, when a young fan hurled himself at against the completely unaware Archer, knocking him to the ground. Fortunately, reported Stan Charles of Soccer America, security got to the trespassing fan before the 19-year-old keeper on loan from Tottenham could get his gloves on him. Archer wasn't hurt, said Charles, and the young fan was held on a charge of trespassing.
AIM HIGH
"Your hopes, dreams, and aspirations are legitimate. They are trying to take  you airborne, above the clouds, above the storms, if you only let them."--William James, psychologist and philosopher who must have, at least once, experienced the thrill of flying for a hard, high one headed toward the upper 90.
QUOTABLE
“Being a goalkeeper gives you a unique perspective on things. You are part of a team yet somehow separate; there are no grey areas, with success or failure being measured in real time; and you have a physical job which you can do well only by paying attention to your mental well-being. A great goalkeeper has to have the keys to a great mindset. To be able to work well in the box, I believe you have to be able to think outside of the box.”-- Brad Friedel, American goalkeeper playing for Tottenham Hotspurs

TIP OF THE MONTH
Rather than punishing yourself over mistakes, take a new route to self-confidence that will lead the way to better skills. Here are some strategies for building confidence, courtesy of Managing Your Mind, by Gillian Butler and Tony Hope: 1) Practice; 2) Behave "as if" ("as if" you are more confident than you feel); 3) Take the zig-zag path (be flexible in your behavior); 4) Learn from your mistakes (only way to avoid mistakes is to become stagnant); 5) Limit the self-blame (don't blame yourself); 6) Be kind to yourself (speak encouraging words to yourself).

KEEPING SECRETS
Martin Brennan, ex-Tottenham FC goalkeeper coach currently with Wycombe Wanderers discusses where he sees goalkeeper development heading: I think goalkeepers will need to be a lot fitter due to the balls getting lighter every year and I think coaches will need to coach their goalkeeper to just keep the ball out of the net. Also I think the keepers will need to do a lot more with the team in the keep ball and touch drills they do everyday. My reason for this is because of the back pass rule and the managers wanting their goalkeeper to play a lot higher to sweep up behind. Now the more comfortable they are with their feet the easier they will find it.
