Workshop for coaches, parents
BRING YOUR OWN KEEPER
Current Keeper Club members are invited to serve as assistants and demonstrators for the BYOK (Bring Your Own Keeper) workshop at DyessPark, Sun., Feb. 17, 3:30pm. This is a free clinic conducted by Jim Walker for recreational and competitive coaches and parents who wish to learn more about preparing boys and girls for this special position. Coaches and parents are invited to bring one or more goalkeepers, and a ball, to join in exercises that will provide effective ways to warm up keepers prior to games, also discuss how to deal with keeper successes and failures, and how to help them grow in the position. Keeper Club members can let Coach Walker know if they are available to assist that Sunday. Coaches and parents, please email JWalker332@aol.com if you plan to attend, with names and ages of keepers you will bring.

PUMA CUP NEEDS VOLUNTEERS
There is a need for volunteers for this year's Dynamos Puma Cup, which will feature 186 teams Feb. 9-10 playing at Dyess, Zube, and Burroughs parks. Parents and coaches, and even older players, are needed to help, especially on Saturday morning and Sunday afternoon. This is a valuable event for the Dynamos, so if you can assist, email tournament director Andrew Naudin at deportivonaudin@att.netor contact Dynamos Volunteer Coordinator Rachel Fritz at gfritz1@comcast.net  to join the fun and lend a hand.

WAYWARD BALL
The Wilson soccer ball Steven Franke was awarded for last year's high Keeper Club training attendance took a journey, but happily it ended up in its rightful owner's hands. Steven received the ball at the Keeper Club's annual Christmas party Dec. 13 and had it autographed by trainers Roland Sikinger and Jim Walker. A few days later, Steven attended the Kick Cancer Camp at DyessPark. The ball disappeared and Steven was disheartened, believing it was gone forever. After the holidays, Steven resumed Monday training Jan. 14 and spotted the ball in Roland's bag. "Hey, there's my ball," he exclaimed. Roland carefully inspected it and straight-faced: "No, it's not. It belongs to, let's see, the names on here are Jim Walker and Roland Sikinger." Steven has the ball and is guarding it carefully.

KEEPER KWIPZ
**Two goalkeepers were texting each other. One had to stop for a few minutes. Returning to her cell phone, she found this message: "CGYT?" She responded, "huh?" The other keeper shot back: "Cat Got Your Thumb?"
**"He's like the ancient mariner, he stoppeth one of three,"--Coach, discussing his goalkeeper
**What do you use to "hoe a row, give a five, wring with woe?" (answer in KeeperTalk)

KEEPERTALK
Welcome to new member Michaelyn Wilkinson. . .Winner of last month's drawing for a $25 gift certificate to Soccer-4-All is Isobel Herrod. Thanks to others who entered. . .Answer to the Keeper Kwips question above is "hands.". . .Hats off to longtime Keeper Club member and Langham Creek HS goalkeeper Kacie Paine, who was inducted into the National Honor Society during January. . .Payton Salinas continues keeper training while playing basketball at Aragon Middle School. . .On one of the coldest nights of the year, Jan. 14, Roli the Goalie made sure Ethan Rimbey, Isea Gonzalez, Steven Franke, and Michaelyn Wilkinson stayed warm with lots of quick footwork and "stupid keeper tricks" to finish. Ethan's younger brother, Sjorn, helped out to stay warm. . .Roli missed his Monday, Jan. 28, session as he made a journey to Aruba in the Caribbean to help celebrate the 60th wedding anniversary of his mom and dad, Marianne and Josef. . .St. Thomas High School goalkeepers Stephen Luther, Cameron Arndt, Jake Hyslop and Louis Pamungkas, all coached by Keeper! Club alumnus Michael Sicola, drew praise in a Houston Chronicle article after the Eagles captured the St. Louis Showcase tournament title in December and showed well in the Dr. Pink Invitational in Frisco, Texas. St. Thomas opened league play Feb. 1 against Tomball Corcordia Lutheran. . .Tim Howard, expected to start for the U. S. National Team in its Feb. 6 World Cup qualifying match with Honduras, is unbeaten in his last six games with Everton in the English Premier League following last week's 2-1 victory over West Bromwich Albion. . .Igor Casillas, voted best goalkeeper in the world by FIFA at the 2012 Ballon d'Or awards, has a fracture in his left hand and is expected to miss both of Real Madrid's Champions League knockout clashes against Manchester United. . .If you have read this far, here's a chance to win a $25 gift card to Soccer-4-All. Simply send the answer (elsewhere in this newsletter) to the riddle: What do you use to "hoe a row, give a five, and wring with woe?" to jwalker332@aol.com. There will be a drawing of respondents to determine the winner. . .We welcome goalkeepers, coaches, and parents to share items with us about this special position of soccer. Photos, clippings, letters, anecdotes and other thoughts will be accepted for publication. Simply email to jwalker332@aol.com.
Sometimes Coach Jim checks out Dynamos' keepers closeup
during games, as he does here as Steven Franke makes a
save.  Also watching closely, from the cart, is Ranger David,
a Cy-Fair coach who checks out the troops on a regular basis.

QUOTABLE
"I work with the idea that goalkeepers should fall in love with the art of goalkeeping,"--Dan Gaspar, owner-operator of Star Goalkeeper schools and camps.

TIP OF THE MONTH
Keepers who succeed handle the ball on their own between games and training sessions, for five minutes, fifteen minutes, a half hour. Take two or three simple handling drills and do them over and over, simple things perfectly every time. Do your best on every touch.

KEEPING SECRETS
Troubleshooting failure on ground balls: 1) legs too far apart; 2) hands not behind the ball; 3) waiting for a slow-rolling ball (always go for the ball).
