CAMP TO FEATURE TEX AND DOC
A lanky Texan and a lovely doctor will headline the Keeper Club’s annual summer goalkeeper camp August 12-14 at Dyess Park. The tall one will be David Benner, a widely-traveled professional goalkeeper and highly-respected keeper trainer, who will journey down from Dallas to cover saves, sizzling shots, and shootouts. Assisting, and covering saves, stretching and strains, will be Heather Koudelka, who will look much the same as the many previous years she attended as a camper and worked as an instructor, but with a newly-earned doctorate in physical therapy. With Tex Benner and Doc Koudelka in starring roles, the camp features quality instruction, an official camp t-shirt, daily prizes, and an end-of-camp pizza and Powerade lunch. Fee is $125, with a $25 discount for paid-up Keeper Club members. Camp times are 5pm until 8pm on Thursday and Friday (August 12, 13) and 9am until noon Saturday (August 14). SUMMER TRAINING GUESTS
Attendees at the Summer Fitness and Technical Training Program at Dyess Park received a welcome message June 27--bring a ball! It marked the beginning of the third week after fitness work without a ball for six sessions of the first two weeks. On July 1, guest trainer Steve Branz, a longtime keeper trainer in the Houston area who in the past has conducted clinics for the Keeper Club, will conduct training, focusing on crossing and shooting. He is a graduate of Iowa’s Cornell College where he was a four-year starter, served as captain his junior and senior years and holds many school records. He later played for the Illinois Thunder of the National Professional Soccer League. The program continues on Mondays (9am) and Tuesdays and Thursdays (6pm) until mid-August. For more information email JWalker332@aol.com or call 281-217-1612.

KEEPERTALK
Among goalkeepers attending the memorial service for Marty Espinoza June 26 were former professionals Roland Sikinger, David Benner, and Steve Branz, along with Keeper Club members Kaylee Barrett, Damon Mosher, Chase Patton, Daniel Adams, Kelsi Gibson, and Trevor Gibson. The service, at Fellowship of Cinco Ranch in Katy, celebrated the life of the Dynamos’ popular trainer, who passed away June 15 after a valiant battle with cancer. . .A third Keeper! Club member will attend St. Edward’s University when Sabrina Pasier begins her freshman year in the fall. Sabrina doesn’t plan to play varsity soccer at the Austin college, but likely will participate in intramurals. Previously, Heather Koudelka and Troi Jorgensen have been starting keepers for the Hilltoppers. Injuries have prevented Sabrina from playing competitively, but she loves the game so much she has continued to train at a high level. . .A core of Dynamos players from both the U15 boys team of Coach Aleks Alanis and the U15 girls team of Coach Troy Hutcheson are attending the Summer Fitness and Technical Program in preparation for the coming season. . .Calvin Anderson is being counted on handle goalkeeping duties for the U17 Dynamos of Coach Paul Meyer. Calvin is participating in the Summer Fitness and Technical Training Program at Dyess Park. . . If you have gotten this far in the newsletter, read a bit more and enter a drawing for a new soccer ball and a Houston Dynamo t-shirt. To enter, simply enjoy “How Jupkins Lost the Cup,” a tragic goalkeeping poem at the end of the newsletter and send an email to JWalker332@aol.com telling what stood between Joe Jupkins and the ball he wanted to save. Anybody reading this, young and old, is eligible to enter. . .The nasty things people can say about goalkeepers! Sports columnist Norman (The Couch Slouch) Chad commented, “The Americans somehow managed a 1-1 draw--thanks to a gift goal Edward Scissorhands could’ve stopped,” referring, of course, to England keeper Robert Green’s mishandling of an American goal. . .The Houston Chronicle reported that because of complaints about the unpredictable nature of the ball being used in the World Cup, Mexico went to the unusual step of employing American footballs in training sessions with goalkeeper Oscar Perez. . .If you have items for Keeper! or KeeperTalk, please email JWalker332@aol.com or call 281-217-1612.

QUOTABLE
“Every day when I work out, I feel so tired; but those are the days I feel more accomplished, so it's well worth it.”--Keeper! Club senior goalkeeper Patty Walrath.

TIP OF THE MONTH
Keep kicking! Continue to work on your kicking and receiving techniques. You must develop the skills to kick the ball over increasingly longer distances with both your dominant and non-dominant foot. Also develop receiving and first touch skills necessary as the last man back.

KEEPING SECRETS
There are coordinating factors to enable you to catch a one-pound ball that is traveling up to 70 miles per our, sometimes at close range. One is technique, which requires flexed fingers to catch the shape of the ball and cushion it, wrists cocked forward, arms bent and body relaxed. There’s also assistance from the gloves, which provide extended finger length, a large surface area, foam cushioning, and movement of the glove to accept the ball.

HOW JUPKINS LOST THE CUP(a poem)
Joe Jupkins was a goalie,
Resourceful, active, bold,
Yes, admirable wholly,
But, ah, he felt the cold.
So, since a second sweater
Still failed to meet his wants,
Nor was his plight the better
For three thick pairs of pants,
When his side pressed, believing
That danger was there none,
His goal unguarded leaving,
Around it he would run.
A fool to take such chances?
Perhaps; but don’t forget,
His school had not finances
To give the goal a net
So if, the pressure stopping,
The foe did break away,
Back through the goalposts popping,
He’d stand again at bay.
Unconquered to the Final
Joe and his comrades came.
Five minutes left, and nine all!
It was a thrilling game!
Down to the far end suring,
His forwards shot and shot;
So, from his lair emerging,
Joe started round to trot.
But since, I know it well, you
Will not believe my tale,
There was, I ought to tell you,
That day a strongish gale.
By crises will unshaken,
The back (a giant) cleared,
And to that goal forsaken
By Joe, the ball careered.
Get back, you blighter! Hurry!
Get back! The warning came;
And with a calm ‘Don’t worry!’
Joe turned to join the game.
O horror! O disaster!
How could you, Joe, forget
That yesterday your master
Had bought the goal a net?
There, through the meshes peering,
Like some poor chimp caged up,
Helpless he watched doom nearing,
How Jupkins lost the Cup.”
--J. B. Poynton, ‘How Jupkins Lost the Cup,’ in The Footballer’s Fireside Book.
