ADVICE FROM KELSI
Maybe we should change the Keeper Club axiom to “Just Say ‘No!’ to Silly Goals.” Member Kelsi Gibson correctly points out that giving up goals is a team effort, not solely the responsibility of the keeper. “If a goal is made it is not all your fault,” Kelsi reminds keeper colleagues, “it is your team’s fault, too, and so once a ball goes in the goal don’t think about all the balls that have gone in that will ruin your day.” In last month‘s Keeper!, readers were asked to email the motto “Just Say ‘No’ to Goals” for a chance to win a $25 gift certificate to Soccer-4-All. Only two keepers--Kelsi, and Marissa Mills--responded, so both will receive prizes.

DOCTOR HEATHER
It won’t mean a thing to opposing forwards bearing down in Houston Women’s Soccer Association games, but the title “Doctor” surely will draw high respect from boys and girls attending this summer‘s annual Dynamos’ Summer Goalkeeper Camp. Keeper Club alumnus Heather Koudelka earned her doctorate in physical therapy in early May, so (while she won’t demand it) please address her as Doctor Heather when she shows up to impart wisdom in the techniques of keeping goal collected from the Keeper Club, and star-studded seasons as the starter for at Cy-Falls HS, St. Edward’s University, and the powerful Houston Challengers (where she’s still playing) in the Houston Women’s Soccer Association.

ROADWORK
Kevin Hobart, who keeps goal for the U14 Dynamos, managed to get in extra running in preparation for tryouts when he chased Coach Walker’s car to ask him a question. “I was driving away from training,” said the coach, “and waved goodbye to Freeman, who was frantically waving and pointing toward something behind me. I looked in the rear view mirror and there was Kev in a full-out, never-give-up chase. I sped up a little to see if he would surrender. He didn’t, and caught me at a stop sign!”

KEEPERTALK
Welcome to Madison Martinez, newest addition to Keeper Club training. . .Talk about excited! Ronni Pierce reported to training May 3 wearing her newly-won heavy-duty letter jacket from Cy-Ranch HS. Which was fine, except the temperature was crowding 90 degrees at the time. “I just wanted everyone to see it,” said a proud Ronni, reluctantly removing it for training. Sadly for us, Ronni is off to her new home in New Mexico, where she should have more opportunity to wear that jacket. . .Patty Walrath and Sabrina Pasier graduated from Cy-Woods HS early this month. Patty underwent surgery to have a nagging foot injury repaired as soon as school ended. Patty enters Houston Baptist University in the fall. . .Check out the Dynamos website for the latest Keeper Club group photo. Good lookin‘ group!. . .High fives to keepers who attended training on May 6--it was one of the best in terms of effort expended, technique shown, and compatibility within the group. Attending were: Maddie Martinez, Sabrina Pasier, Grant Steppe, Kaitrin Miller, Patty Walrath, Francesco Lo Sauro, Ronni Pierce, Damon Mosher, Oscar Barron, Cesar Barron and assistant John Kowalczyk. . .Jonathan Kauffman, a longtime Keeper Club member, is home for the summer from Ouachita Baptist University and plans to work out this summer with the keepers. Jonathan, who was the backup keeper as a Ouachita freshman, will be battling for the starting job in the fall. . .Kevin Hobart turned in some fine keeping, going the distance as his U14 Dynamos tied 2-2, lost 1-0 and won 1-0 in just missing a trip to the finals of the Houston Memorial Day tournament. . .If you have items for Keeper! or KeeperTalk, please email JWalker332@aol.com or call 281-217-1612.

GETTING READY
When showing up for games, be prepared to go through a pre-game routine that will build to a peak so you can be ready at game-time. Think back to your best past performances. How did you feel? How did you warm up? How relaxed did you feel? Use this to build a warmup routine that you can use before every match. You can tweak a little as you go along, but keep the same general framework.

QUOTABLE
“Make ‘em work. That is the secret to success.”--Ol’ Dave, the friendly keeperfrom Dallas

TIP OF THE MONTH
Don’t trust the eyes of a striker. The primary focus of a keeper should always be on the ball, not where the opponent is looking. The ball doesn’t lie!

KEEPING SECRETS
Keepers learn early to shout “Keeper!“ if they have made the decision to win a ball. Also, “Away!“ if making the decision to remain close to goal. But the keeper’s responsibility is not over when putting the onus on teammates to win or clear a ball, but to read what‘s happening and be prepared to react to the ball.
