RUNNING WITH WALKER!
The Keeper Club’s annual summer long conditioning and technique program for goalkeepers preparing for high school and college soccer will begin June 11 (week after tryouts) and continue at Dyess  Park on Tuesday and Thursday evenings (6-7:15pm) through August 8 (week before Select Camp). This is a progressive curriculum for boys and girls 14 years and older and will focus on the demanding “keeper work” that will help aspiring keepers to compete at the varsity level. “When can we fly?”
“What’s your story?” (Everybody has a story)
“Should I wash my gloves? They are really stinky.”
“Awww, why can’t we play keeper golf?”
“Coach, when do you think I’ll get tall?”

QUOTABLE
"Celebrate what you've accomplished, but also raise the bar a little higher each time you succeed." --Mia Hamm, speaking to goalkeepers as well as field players

TIP OF THE MONTH
Keepers need to be in a set position with their hands only when they are in danger of a shot. When moving in the goal, left to right, front to back, run naturally with your arms and legs in sync. You will get to your spot where you need to be quicker.—Roland Sikinger

KEEPING SECRETS
Dealing with corner kicks. I see too many of our younger keepers taking their starting position for corners too close to the near post. That puts them in danger of the ball going over their heads to the far post. I like to start in the center of the goal, body shape facing both ball and penalty spot. Get in the mindset that any ball inside the six yard box is the keeper’s, especially high-lofted balls. Keepers will never know their range of coverage off their goal line for corners unless they try it in training. Two words from the keepers call when the corner is taken: it is either "KEEPER" when coming off your line to get the ball, or "AWAY" when staying on your line. Coach your teammates on the posts that when you call "KEEPER" they take two steps off the post and down the goal line to cover equal parts of the goal. When they hear you call "AWAY" they stay on their post until the ball is cleared out of danger.—Roland Sikinger
