DON’T MISS KEEPER! CAMP
David Benner, Brandon Renken, and Heather Koudelka, all connoisseurs of the fine art of tending goal, are scheduled for appearances as instructors at the 2011 Summer Goalkeeper Camp Aug. 11-13 at Dyess Park, it has been announced by camp director Jim Walker. If you’re a goalkeeper, or aspire to be one, you won’t want to miss a chance to work with this all-star cast. “These are top-notch folks who not only are tried and true experienced keepers in their own right,” says Coach Walker, “but all three have instructed at our camp before and always they have enhanced our keepers with their expertise, friendship and inspiration. It really will be a great experience for both beginner and advanced keepers to spend time with them.” David is a University of Houston grad who has performed professionally in England and Argentina as well as the United States, playing both with the Houston Hurricanes of the 70’s and the Houston Dynamos in the 80’s. David has worked the full camp in recent years, but due to his own busy schedule will attend on Friday and Saturday this year. Brandon, a Keeper! Club alumnus (actually, a club pioneer) and former Dynamos keeper who played at Cy Creek HS and four years at Harvard University, plans to appear on Thursday and Friday. Brandon was lead instructor for several years at the Keeper! Club camp while attending law school and now is a fulltime attorney. Assisting will be Heather, who not only attended Keeper Club training from age nine throughout her high school and college years, but has been an instructor at many holiday and summer camps for the Keeper Club. She was a much-honored starting keeper for four years at St. Edward’s University after a star-studded career at Cy-Falls HS. Having David and Brandon at the helm will assure perspiration-provoking labor, but there will be plenty of fun and technique reinforcement at this three-day camp. Keepers will be able to share in the annual Select Camp rituals of popsicles, prizes and intra-camp competitions and, on the final day, concluding ceremonies include a pizza and Powerade lunch. Fee for the camp is $125, with a $10 discount for Keeper! Club members who do not attend Select Camp. If you sign up for Select Camp, you pay for that camp only and switch over to Keeper Camp for Thursday, Friday, and Saturday sessions. For more information about Keeper Camp, email jwalker332@aol.com or call 281-217-1612. Registration can be made online at www.dynamossoccer.com. Registration deadline is Aug. 5.

After a busy summer, Braden (Striker) Mann joined Summer Fitness for the final weeks. . .A surprise visitor to fitness training July 26, all the way from her new home in New Mexico, was Veronica Pierce, who reviewed the troops and saw them execute “The Veronica,“ the warmup stretch bearing her name and memory of many years at Dyess Park keeper and team training. . .Noah Schroer traveled with his family back home to Indiana and Illinois for two weeks at the end of July, and is looking forward to Keeper Camp Aug. 13. . .Sophomore Kacie Paine is ready to compete for a keeper's spot on the Langham Creek HS varsity after a solid season on the jayvee last season. . .There were highs and lows for Trevor Gibson on his July 25 birthday--most positive that he turned 14 and will be a freshman at Tomball‘s new Memorial HS; downer was a surprise tooth infection, for which he underwent a root canal. Trev survived it all with a painful smile. . .Troi Jorgensen traveled with Mom Vicki for 10 days to Copenhagen, Denmark, and Stockholm, Sweden. When Mom, for many years instrumental with the Dynamos and Cy-Fair Youth Soccer Club, returned home, Troi settled near Stockholm to prepare for a three-month stint with semi-pro women’s team Stuvsta. QUOTABLE
"The goalkeeper is the lone eagle, the player of mystery, the last defender. Less the keeper of a goal than the keeper of a dream."--Vladimir Nabokov, Russian novelist.

TIP OF THE MONTH
Work on perfecting both right and left sides of your body. Young keepers tend to use the dominant side, while an advanced keeper moves easily off either leg and to either side, and punches or tips the ball with either hand. This comes through repetition at training. Hard work, but it pays off.

KEEPING SECRETS
When an attacker takes up a position in front of you on a corner kick, you need to create space for yourself. Do this by first stepping closer to the near post. The obstructing attacker, who likely intends to camp out in front of you, will adjust to remain ball side. At this point, you can direct a strong defender to post up in front of the attacker, determined to beat him to any cross. Just before the ball is served, step back into the space you have created and get set for the serve.
