KEEPERS HAVE A BALL
Despite the stifling heat and intense training taking place at DyessPark during the Summer Fitness and Technical Program, there’s always time for a few laughs. Summer training veterans Kaitrin Miller and Stephen Sorensen, arriving early, both tried to sneak a ball into the Far Pavilion on the fourth day of the “no-ball” second week of the Summer Fitness and Technical Program. But they were nabbed and the offending spheres concealed in their backpacks before others arrived. After a few jokes, the two--one a goalkeeper, the other a midfielder--worked harder without the ball than anyone else, and prepared themselves for upcoming sessions, which began June 25, during which the ball was the star. Fitter (all gain, no pain), and with wider smiles, the combination of keepers and field players making up the group of 20-some went to work on saving and shooting techniques that will carry them into August. This training for fall team preparation (and high school and college soccer) continues on Tuesday and Thursday evenings at 6pm. Junior Keepers, and other Keeper Club members 13 years and younger have been invited to join the group on Thursday, July 18, and Tuesday, July 23. For more information, email jwalker332@aol.com. Attending one or more of the first three sessions were: Eli Alaniz, Nadia Cooper, Naomi Cooper, Alysson Crouch, Megan Cybul, Matt Dominguez, Sam Dominguez, Michelle Easley, Steve Franke, Kenny Grau, Izel Hernandez, Joel Hernandez, Omar Hernandez, Isobel Herrod, Bryce Hinze, Monique Hutcheson, Taylor Hutcheson, Karinna Lara, Connor Miller, Kaitrin Miller, Marissa Mills, Kacie Paine, Payton Salinas, Maddie Saucedo, Stephen Sorensen, and Ethan Urrutia. Visitors included Kacie Cardenas, Ethan Rimbey, Izzy Tullier, Georgia Williams, Grace Seloover, Ian Herrod, and Maison Bell.

KEEPERTALK
Congrats to Braden (Striker) Mann, who had seven straight shutouts in President’s Cup play as the U16 Dynamos won the South Texas title and reached the semifinals of the Region III championships in Alabama. After yielding no goals in three regional victories, the Dynamos were 0-0 at halftime in the semis before losing 2-0 to North Texas. . .Summer fitness trainees are missing Jonathan Kauffman, an off-season DyessPark regular who had knee surgery June 3. Jon, who set a high standard for younger keepers, was looking forward to starting at goalkeeper in his senior year at CentralBaptistUniversity in Arkansas. Nobody is betting against him coming back. . .Dynamos under-14 keeper Marissa Mills, on crutches in May with a bruised knee cap, and suspected meniscus tear, is rebounding strong with total focus in the Summer Fitness Program. . .Isobel Herrod returned to fitness training after a trip to Chicago and will miss later sessions while on a journey to Los Angeles; Michelle Easley spent a week at Texas A&M camp; Kacie Paine is back after vacationing in Hilton Head, South Carolina; Aly Crouch is off to Pennsylvania for a long visit. . . . .Aly, by the way, for the second month in a row captured a $25 gift card by answering te question: where is Carolyn Kenaley, once  keeper now a pilot, going to land her plane when she gets her wings? Aly's answer: an aircraft carrier. Now, for this month's drawing, what was the Cy-Fair Youth Soccer Club called before changing its name? THANK YOU ALL
Thanks to Coaches Troy Hutcheson and Steve Hinze for their assistance during training sessions of the Summer Fitness and Technical Program. A former Marine, Coach Troy sets a strong pace in the fitness activities and Coach Steve, assistant principal at Tomball Memorial HS, has played and coached. In fact, thanks to all the parents of the fitness attendees for their interest and support. Also, deep-felt thanks for the impromptu birthday party (organized by Kacie Cardenas, kin to the celebrant) for the “old guy” at the end of fitness training June 28. Cupcakes and Powerade—what a combination! Best of all was a hastily-constructed souvenir birthday card, signed by people I immensely admire and respect—goalkeepers and field players who brave the summer heat in order to improve their fitness and skills. Thanks also to those former keepers and players who took time to email or post on Facebook birthday greetings.—Jim Walker

TIP OF THE MONTH
Do the simple things right.

KEEPING SECRETS
There is a common misconception that a goalkeeper need not maintain a high level of fitness. Granted, keepers, unlike field players, are not required to run continually during a match. However, just as keepers need to master a set of specialized skills, they must also develop a specific type of fitness. Fatigue, caused by overall lack of fitness, diminishes skill performance and frequently leads to mental errors. Therefore, the keeper cannot rely on skills alone. Fitness is an equally important requirement for successful performance.—Joe Luxbacher.
