SUMMER FUN, FITNESS
It’s fun. . .if you like that kind of humor.—A goalkeeper's appraisal of past “Walker Camps.”
A splendid blend of veterans and newcomers will kick off the Keeper Club’s annual summer-long conditioning and technique program June 11. “Kick off” may not the precise words, however, as no ball will be present for the first two weeks! After two weeks, it will be “all ball” as the program continues at DyessPark on Tuesday and Thursday evenings (6pm-7:15pm) through August 8. This will help “in-shape” keepers as well as “out-of-shape” keepers get ready for high-level fall club soccer as well as the rigorous demands of high school soccer. There will be younger keepers, and some field players, too—but the curriculum is geared for boys and girls 14 years and older, focusing on demanding “keeper work.” Jim Walker has worked with Cy-Fair and Dynamos goalkeepers for more than 20 years and he will be inviting guest trainers to appear frequently for special assignments. The cost is $100 for the entire summer, with a 50 per cent discount for Dynamos, Keeper Club, and Cy-Fair Youth Soccer Club members. There is a registration form online. For additional information, please email jwalker332@aol.com or call 281-217-1612.

KEEPERTALK
If you enjoy keeper training, don’t forget to thank your parents, who have deemed it important enough in your soccer development to deliver you to training. If an older sister or brother is chauffeuring you, thank them, too, even if that isn’t normally something you would do. If you’re driving yourself to training, as some of you are, thanks go to parents for providing, or helping provide, your vehicle. . .Keeper Clubber Braden (Striker) Mann leads his U16 Dynamos into the Region III President’s Cup championships in Decatur, Alabama, this month (June 6-9). Braden had three straight shutouts in his team’s romp to the South Texas title. The national tournament will be held July 11-14 in Auburndale, Florida. . .A teammate whispered “you are on fire!” to Cameron Rieth during his spirited performance in the championship game of the Albion Hurricanes Memorial Cup. He gave up only two goals in four games, but his U14 Dynamos Silver squad lost to Houstonians in a title game shootout. . .Dynamos under-13 keeper Marissa Mills was on crutches after suffering a bruised knee cap, and suspected meniscus tear, and missed a few games, but bounced back in a short time to train and play in the Memorial weekend tournament. . .U12 Dynamos' Aly Crouch completed her second triathlon within a few weeks in early May, this one at the Evelyn Rubenstein Jewish Community Center in Houston. She finished the events--swimming 300 meters, biking six miles, and running 2.4 miles--in an hour and two minutes, coming in seventh in her age group. . .Steven Franke and Kenzie Peterson experienced the highs and lows of being a keeper in Memorial Day Tournament championship game penalty kick shootouts. Steven saved three in a row as his team took the title; KP gave up only one PK, but her teammates didn’t convert even one, so her team lost after a scoreless duel in regulation. . . Alumni report: Former longtime Keeper Club member John Kowalczyk earned his law degree from South Texas College of Law at the end of May, now preparing for the bar exam. . .Former Keeper Club member Mya Morrison, a captain in the U. S. Army, spent time in Kuwait during May and has been deployed again to Afghanistan. . .Another ex-Keeper Clubber, Carolyn Kenaley, a graduate of Virginia Military Institute, currently is a Naval Flight Officer closing in on her wings at Pensacola, Fla., where she is undergoing training to fly tailhook, the aircraft that lands on carriers. . .Aly Crouch won last month’s drawing for a $25 Soccer-4-All gift card by completing the quote “all things seem possible in May.” In this month’s Keeper!, keepers can enter a drawing for a gift card by sending an email to jwalker332@aol.com with the answer to this question: where is Carolyn Kenaley, once a keeper who is now a pilot, going to land her plane when she gets her wings? Email answer to jwalker332@aol.com. . .Goalkeepers, coaches, and parents are urged to share photos and items of interest for possible use in Keeper! and KeeperTalk--Simply email to jwalker332@aol.com.

QUOTABLE
“Not everything that can be counted counts, and not everything that counts can be counted.”--Albert Einstein, a keeper who didn’t play in goal, but reached many important ones.

TIP OF THE MONTH
When a keeper shouts, “Who has 11?” or “Cover the middle,” it’s not specific enough. Quite often, there is no response. The command should be: “Dylan, left, 11” or “Daisy, stay middle!”

KEEPING SECRETS
Maintain a training mentality that strives for perfection. This will help you develop good habits. Don’t be satisfied in training to merely keep the ball out of the net, but to do it with technique, fundamentals, ease, control, and comfort. Utilize these good habits during every save—especially the easier ones. By focusing on this, you will attain technique needed when a more dangerous situation occurs.
