Summer Camp
AUGUST CAMP SCHEDULED
Good, better, best. Never let it rest,
Until your good is better, and your better best.
For a young goalkeeper, opportunities to touch the ball in the presence of experienced keeper trainers and veteran goalkeepers is good. To do it for three hours each on three consecutive days is better. Best of all is when the keeper trainers and experience keepers take a personal interest in you. That’s what happens at the Keeper! Club’s annual Summer Goalkeeper Camp, set this year for Aug. 11-13 (5-8pm on Thursday and Friday, 9am-noon on Saturday, ending with a pizza and Powerade party). Jim Walker directs the camp and in recent years has had Roland Sikinger, David Benner, Brandon Renken, and Heather Koudelka as featured instructors who will work individually with boys and girls who show a desire to improve. For more information, email jwalker332@aol.comor call 281-217-1612.

SALUTE TO OUR ARMED KEEPER
“I miss my husband. I miss the States. I miss my dog. I miss my parents. I miss civilian clothes, but I know I must keep doing what I do everyday. Freedom certainly isn't Free. There is a reason we have such a great country and I would stay here forever so you can maintain that freedom.” --Lt. Mya Morrison Taylor.
Before Mya joined the U. S. Army, she was a member of the Keeper! Club and later a standout goalkeeper at Bryan College in Tennesee. She now is in Afghanistan and has been for many months. After her comments on Facebook, a relative wrote her: "Stand Tall, Lt. Taylor. It's not easy being green, and your troops look to you for your confidence and your approval. We'll all be here when you return, until then YOU keep your powder dry and your tomahawk sharp. And do one more pushup for the Big Ranger in the Sky!" When she was contacted for permission to use her quote in Keeper!, Mya’s response was: Hey, you can certainly share that note with them. Also let them know that the locals love soccer balls here. They use them for soccer and volleyball and they call them ‘Wally Ballys.’ Funny how a soccer ball is understood across any country and can make so many people happy!" We’re proud of you, Lt. Mya, and wish for you a safe tour of duty so you can return and enjoy those things dear to you! Because of you and your fellow soldiers, we are able to enjoy things dearest to us now.

KEEPER KWIZ
Goalkeepers need nimble minds, so, wrap your mind around this one. Players who respond with the right answer will be entered in a drawing for a $25 gift certificate to Chick-fil-a. Here’s the puzzler: Nigel's mother has three children. She also has three coins to give to them. All three coins come from the United States, and are given out as follows: Penny receives a penny; Nicholas receives a nickel; the other child receives a dime. What is the name of the child who received the dime? To get your chance at that Chick-fil-a gift certificate, email your answer to jwalker332@aol.com. Answer will appear in next month’s Keeper!
KEEPERTALK
Keeper Club training ends Thursday, June 2 for summer vacation, resuming in August. . .Hats off to Cy-Fair HS sophomore Mallory Majewski on selection to the first team All-District 17-5A and also to the district All-Academic team. Eberth Arteaga, a former Keeper Club trainee, was named to the second team All-Greater Houston squad and first team District 13-5A as a Tomball senior. . .Junior Keeper Ryder Dougherty came up big for his under-11 Cy-Fair Battle team in mid-April to preserve a 2-1 victory over Aggieland Texans. The Battle was holding to a come-from-behind 2-1 lead when the opponents were awarded a penalty kick with three minutes remaining. Ryder read the kick and swatted it away to preserve the win. . .Junior Keeper regular Brady Stonebraker and brother Dylan (also a frequent KC attendee) helped the U10 Cy-Fair Warriors finish on top in their division this year. The team yielded only six goals (three in one game) all season. Since nobody else has been keen to play keeper, Brady guarded the nets most of the time. In a recent 3v3 tournament, the Warriors won their U10 division and at the end of the day played a friendly against a San Antonio squad with a high national reputation. Even without using his hands, Brady assumed a protective role and fended off the more experienced team‘s potent offense time after time as last defender. . . Longtime Keeper Club member, goalkeeper summer camp instructor and Houston attorney Brandon Renken will be married June 9 to Lindsay Manford in Kona, Hawaii. Brandon plans to appear as guest instructor for the Summer Goalkeeper Camp in August. . . Goalkeeper Quinonez Wilson of Paraguayan second division club Sport Colombia scored off a free kick just outside his penalty area that reportedly set a world record for long-range goals. The strike in a 1-1 tie with Cerro Porteno flew long and high for 90 yards, and over the hands of the Cerro Porteno keeper. Wilson was credited with the goal, then received a yellow card for removing his shirt in celebration.

QUOTABLE
“Keepers resting on their laurels are wearing them on the wrong end.”--With apologies to Philosopher Malcolm Kushner.

TIP OF THE MONTH
A keeper with limited foot skills turns too many goal kicks, and punts, into 50-50 balls. Goal kicks are often the first point of a team’s attack, and having a field player rather than a keeper take a goal kick means giving up numerical advantage. Punting isn’t only a matter of blasting it upfield. The trajectory can give forwards an advantage. A well-aimed low punt can find a wide player who has slipped away from her marker. --Tim Mulqueen, Soccer America
KEEPING SECRETS
Rob Green knows about errors after a big one in the 2010 World Cup for England against USA.Then there's Arsenal's Wojciech Szczęsny, whose mix-up with Laurent Koscielny gifted Birmingham City's Obefami Martins the ball, from which he scored, to win the Carling Cup. "Unfortunately, that's the life of a goalkeeper," said Birmingham City keeper Ben Foster. "You can make good saves. then when you let one in at the last minute, you're a villain. Confidence is the important word in the goalkeeping world. The good keeper rebounds with confidence and the courage to go on."
