BYOK WORKSHOP
Because of a good turnout for the Keeper Club’s BYOK (Bring Your Own Keeper) workshop January 23, another is already in the works. Tentatively scheduled for Sunday, February 27, at 3:30 at Dyess Park, the second free workshop invites all Cy-Fair Youth Soccer Club and Dynamos coaches and parents of players interested in becoming a goalkeeper to bring them and participate in activities that will help the adult deal with the player. Participants I the first workshop are invited to return. Theme of the first workshop was “Goalkeepers are to be loved, not yelled at,“ Attendees included 13 coaches and parents, and one older brother, and 16 boys and girls wearing gloves. Coach Walker led the group through a series of keeper-related activities that required each participant to have a ball, then two people with one ball. Awarded in a post-clinic drawing were two new soccer balls and other prizes. Participating were players Ethan Bratcher, Salvador Leyva, Brendan Kennedy, Alex Easley, Mitchell Mulinix, Reese Olfers, Michael Novoa, Jeff Weissling, Braden Abramowitz, Thomas Pittman, Chandler Jones, Hayden Ritchie, Ryder Dougherty, Ian Lancaster, Ethan Brasher, and Aaron Austin; and coaches and parents Chad Pilburn, Dana Kennedy, Mike Easley, Rick Mulinix, Mike Olfers, Kent Weissling, Darrell Abramowitz, Travis Dougherty, Curt Jones, Dave Lancaster, Enrique Leyva, Julie Brasher, and big brother Matt Austin. Tips on working with your goalkeeper, whether you’re a coach or parent, will be re-visited on Sunday, February 27, and it’s free. All coaches and parents are invited to bring one or more keepers and join in effective ways to warm up keepers prior to games, and discuss how to deal with keeper successes and failures, and how to help them grow in the position. Please email JWalker332@aol.com if you plan to attend, with names of keepers who will also attend.

VAN DER SAR TO RETIRE
Manchester United goalkeeper Edwin Van der Sar, 40, confirmed to Fox News Jan. 17 that he will retire the current season ends. He's been considering retirement, he said, since wife Annemarie suffered a stroke in December, 2009. Van de Sar has played for United since a transfer from Fulham in 2005. His arrival ended attempts to adequately replace Danish keeper Peter Schmeichel, who left in 1999 and was followed by U.S. goalie Tim Howard, Mark Bosnich, Fabien Barthez, and Ricardo before Van der Sar settled in for good.

KEEPERTALK
It was cold and windy, but not too brisk for seven brave keepers to attend training Jan. 21. There was Trevor Gibson, eyeing a final tuneup before Olympic Development Program tryouts that Sunday; also sister Kelsi Gibson and her good friend and teammate, Kenzie Peterson; also the reliable Kennedy McGill; and the man with glue on his hands, Aaron Austin, and last but not least, Jorge Toledo, joining the big guys after a season with the Junior Keepers. . .Mallory Majewski returns as goalkeeper for Cy-Fair HS after last year winning “Rookie of the Year” honors as well as first team all-district and academic all-district selections. . .Cy-Former member Tomas Feliciano, Keeper Club nickname Zero, is president of the National Honor Society branch at Cy-Ranch HS. . .Happy Birthday to former Keeper Club member and Summer Keeper Camp instructor Dr. Heather Koudelka, who is, don’t tell anybody, 26 years old. . .After attending the BYOK workshop Jan. 23, three keepers reported Jan. 27 to training: Ryder Dougherty, Hayden Ritchie, and Salvador Leyva. . .Greeting, too, to Felipe Lara, who is joining the U15 Division Two Dynamos this spring. . .Kacie Paine is playing on the junior varsity as a freshman at Langham Creek HS, but has been asked to train with the varsity on occasion. Kacie is a promising star on the horizon who has worked hard to achieve her higher level this past year. . .Kaylee Barrett doesn’t take lightly her role as elected captain for the U14 Division One girls. At the team’s recent “fashion” fundraiser at Charming Charlie’s, Kaylee stepped out front to explain to arrivals the essence of her team and what it is all about. . .If you have items for Keeper! or KeeperTalk, please email JWalker332@aol.com or call 281-217-1612.

A LITTLE HISTORY
1871--The goalkeeper is first mentioned by name
1905--Keeper restricted to goal line during penalty kick. Previously allowed to move out six yards
1913--Keepers could now handle ball only within penalty area, rather than within entire half.
1929--Keeper was banned from moving sideways on the line during a penalty kick
1938--Goal nets, though already widely used, are first mentioned in “Laws of the Game”
1992--Keepers banned from handling passes from the feet of teammates
1998--Keepers again allowed to move sideways on the line during a penalty kick
2000--Four-step rule for goalkeepers is abolished

QUOTABLE
“In the depth of winter, I finally learned that within me there lay an invincible summer.” --Albert Camus (1913-1960) French writer who played goalkeeper for his university team in Algeria.
 TIP OF THE MONTH
Lifting the correct knee when going for a high ball may seem trivial, but it could determine whether the keeper holds the ball or drops it, as well as staying healthy or being injury. When going up for the ball, lift the knee closest to the attacker--it will elevate you above the attacker and protect you if a collision occurs.

KEEPING SECRETS
Neglecting field training, especially at a young age, is a mistake. Goalkeepers need to keep up field skills; they need to be able to control, dribble, and pass the ball at all ages. Being involved in field training also lessens the chance that a keeper will be surprised by a move he has never seen before, because he will have learned it with other payers on his team at training.
