CHRISTMAS PARTY SCHEDULED
The Keeper Club’s 16th annual Christmas party will be held December 16 at Dyess Park, featuring keeper camaraderie, pizza, drinks and other goodies, contests and the annual Krazy Keeper gift exchange (previously called “White Elephant,” but changed several years ago when the elephants complained). Festivities begin at 5’clock with a training session, to which keepers of all ages are invited. Pizza and drinks will be provided at 6pm, while donations of cookies, candy and other Christmas treats will be graciously welcomed. More on the Christmas party next month. Twenty keepers attended last year’s party. Twenty survived.

PERFECT? PERFECT!
Keeper Club trainees are encouraged to become “perfect within their range,“ to reach the point through repetitions of techniques where they are making the simple save, to make decisions that enable them to collect the ball in the most efficient manner possible, and to put forth the effort to execute all basic saves with proper technique. Become perfect?, the young keeper asks. Yes, “perfect” is the reply. Don’t drop the easy ones--handle the simple balls with confidence and poise. Through hard work at training and daily practice, slowly but steadily extend your range and take on more advanced techniques, learning to make split-second decisions on the difficult shots.

KEEPERTALK
Daylight Saving Time ends Sunday, November 7, so be ready to fall back an hour. . .Roland Sikinger enjoyed a reunion of sorts with keepers during the October 28 photo shoot. Because Dynamos trainer Chris Wells has been detained in England due to immigration snags, Rolie the Goalie has been covering his teams and unable to appear for regular keeper training, other than to wave from across the field. He will return to regular Monday sessions with keepers when Chris reports back, hopefully within the next few weeks. . .Claire Benson and Amber Baker, both splendid forwards for the U19 Dynamos of Coaches Mark Walaszczyk and Mark Wilmer, volunteered to tend nets for a team that entered the season with no tried and true goalkeeper. Both have been excellent as the team compiled a winning record and finished second in their first division league. . .High fives to regulars at Junior Keeper sessions, including Sammy Frusco, Steven Franke, Brady Stonebraker, Macy Rockey, Jaime Guajardo, Jorge Toledo, Johnny Marsh and Nathaniel Austin, learning that hard work pays off. . .Double high fives to Bryant Munoz and Sophie Frusco for continuing as assistants and doing important jobs at training. Bryant, not a keeper but a field player, has been dependable and effective; Sophie works intensely as keeper in regular training, then steps into her assistant‘s role with the Junior Keepers, demonstrating, serving, and setting up activities. . .Longtime Keeper Club member Michael Sicola, a recent graduate of Texas State University, is working with goalkeepers at St. Thomas HS, his alma mater. St. Thomas seems to be collecting lots of top-notch coaches as Michael joins baseball’s Craig Biggio on the athletic staff. . .Keeper Club alumnus Troi Jorgensen was selected as Player of the Week in mid-October by the Heartland Conference. It was the third such honor this season for the feisty goalkeeper who carried an 0.42 goals against average as the Hilltoppers lifted their record to 14-0-1 and a No. 6 rating in the national poll. . .Another former Keeper Club member, U. S. Naval Academy sophomore Hannah Legler has started 12 times while appearing in 18 games for the Middies, posting a 5-5-3 record with an 1.10 gga. . .Sophomore Jonathan Kauffman is seeing plenty of action in goal for Quachita Baptist University, now 9-5-1. . .Keeper Club alum Sabrina Pasier, now at St. Edward’s University, was pictured on page one of the Houston Chronicle Oct. 8 as a participant in a run to raise funds for cancer research. Sabrina’s mother succumbed to the disease several years ago. . .For the tops in soccer talk, check out Glenn Davis on Mondays from 7-9pm with the Dynamo All Access talk show and again on Tuesdays from 7-8pm with news and interviews. Soccer fans can follow on Twitter: Soccermattersgd for inside stuff and there’s more on http://glenndavissoccer.com. Call in, too, at 281-212-5790. Glenn would love to hear from you. . .If you have items for Keeper! or KeeperTalk, please email JWalker332@aol.com or call 281-217-1612.

PERSEVERANCE PAYS FOR DERIC
For nearly two years, Tyler Deric reported to Houston Dynamo practice knowing that as the team’s third goalkeeper the likelihood of getting game time was small. But he came to practice each day and gave a solid effort. On a Saturday in October, his hard work paid off. “We don’t pick guys for charity,” head coach Dominic Kinnear said. “Only if we think they can help us. I think he’s improved a lot over the last 12 months, and the way Pat [Onstad], Tally [Hall], and Tim [Hanley] treat him it shows.” Rather than tell the young goalkeeper early about his first start, Kinnear waited until game day. “That morning I was walking back from breakfast, and they waved me over,” Deric explained. “I said, 'Cool, let’s do it,' and went to the hotel room and called friends and family and told them to watch the game.” They saw Deric post a shutout in his first-ever Major League Soccer game in front of a hostile crowd. Deric’s shutout--the first by Houston in league play since July 10--gave the Dynamo a 1-0 win over San Jose, and Kinnear was impressed. “He didn’t do anything dynamic, but held some low balls at the end there, came out well on crosses, and his kicking was good,” Kinnear said. “You have to say it was a good performance.” Deric’s start was the first MLS by a Dynamo Academy product. “It’s a great achievement to get that first game under your belt,” Deric said. “It’s a good boost of confidence and motivation with the off season coming up to try and get more prepared for next year knowing that I had a game.”--Dwayne Capodice, Dynamo E-Letter

Every keeper at some point wishes
the goal line would be like this
o
GOING FORWARD
Columbus Crew goalkeeper Will Hesmer ventured far from his goal on an October Saturday and scored in stoppage time to earn the Crew a 2-2 tie at Toronto. Hesmer struck in the 92nd minute after a goal mouth scramble following a Crew corner kick. "I've never gone into the box before, it's my first time ever," said Hemser.--Canadian Press.

RULE OF DIVING
Every takeoff is optional. Every landing is mandatory.

QUOTABLE
“Let us not look back in anger or forward in fear, but around in awareness.”--James Thurber, a non-athletic writer who nonetheless surely must have taken a turn in goal

TIP OF THE MONTH
Using the correct knee (the one closest to the nearest attacker) when going for a high ball is very important and takes a fair amount of coordination, so keepers need many repetitions to get it right. It not only aids in holding onto the ball, but helps to prevent injury.

KEEPING SECRETS
When going up to catch high balls, tilt your hands and get your fingers a bit over the top of the ball. Otherwise, the ball can roll off your fingers and over them into the net.
