ANNOUNCING: SUMMER FITNESS
What: Fitness and Technical Program for goalkeepers and field players
Who: Boys and girls 14 years and older
Where: Dyess Park
When: Begins June 14
How Long: Eight weeks
For keepers and field players entering high school or are already high school and college students, here’s an opportunity to prepare for that high school or college team you’re trying out for in the fall. It’s a fitness program, directed by Jim Walker at Dyess Park, that will allow you to grow from whatever fitness level you have to what you need to satisfy any coach’s fitness expectations in your efforts to make the team. It’s a technical program, too, with skill work for keepers and attackers. It begins Monday, June 14, at 9am and continues on Mondays at 9am, and Tuesdays and Thursdays at 6pm, for eight weeks, ending in August. The fee is $100, with discounts ($50) for Dynamos players and Keeper Club members. Once registered, keepers and field players may attend as many days as they desire. The sessions, each running about one hour and fifteen minutes, are designed to help keepers win or maintain positions when they report to their respective club, high school or college teams. For the past several years, the program has been open to field players, who can benefit from crossing and shooting activities as well as the fitness regimen. To register, please make check payable to Dynamos Keeper Club and mail to: Keeper Club Summer Fitness, 10924 Grant Rd #224, Houston TX 77070. For more information email JWalker332@aol.com or call 281-217-1612.

FAREWELL
The Keeper Club loses two valuable members when Veronica Pierce departs at end of the month for her new home in Farmington, New Mexico, and Patty Walrath leaves at summer’s end to begin her new career at Houston Baptist University. Ronni and Patty have been lively leaders at training sessions, always willing to demonstrate, lead groups, shag shots, enliven a session that gets too serious, or help bring back on track one that lost focus. For the past two years, Ronni and Patty, along with younger colleague Kaitrin Miller, won year-end awards for attending the most sessions. Both put in extra time and effort to make themselves better, but always were willing to help others along the way. Sometimes, in a fit of giggling or outrageous behavior, one of them always relieved tension by devilishly saying “Coach, what would you do without us?” Thanks, Ronni and Patty, for what you have meant to the Keeper Club, and all the best from the rest of us as you move on.

KEEPERTALK
Welcome to Chase Patton, a keeper for the U11 Dynamos Bronze team. . .Roly the Goalie presided over a drawing for four tickets (provided by parent Ray Steppe) to the Dynamo game May 1. Francesco Lo Sauro was the lucky winner. Thanks, Ray and Roly!. . .Both Kelsi Gibson and Marissa Mills came up with diving and breakaway saves when their teams faced each other and battled to a 1-1 tie at Dyess April 10. The following week it was learned Marissa was playing with a broken tibia bone and would miss the rest of the season. Marissa plans to be ready for the summer keeper camp. . .Kennedy McGill went the distance and turned in a fine performance as the U12 Dynamos defeated Space City, 3-1, April 17. . .Grant Steppe shut out Eclipse Red in the first half with several fine saves and efficient distribution, then scored a goal the second half to spark the U11 Dynamos to a 1-0 victory April 24; the next day, Ethan Maxson got good grades in goal from trainer Chris Wells as the Dynamos tied Texas Heat, 1-1. . .Kaylee Barrett returned to action in mid-April after being sidelined for eight weeks with a fractured arm. . .Everybody got wet when Roland held a session on boxing in the “Lake at Matzke” April 19 when Dyess was too soggy for training. Attending were Braden Mann, Trevor Gibson, Maddie Brown, Chase Patton, Cameron Rieth, Sabrina Pasier, and Kelsi Gibson. . .Senior keeper and bass player Patty Walrath traveled to New York City for performances with the Cy-Woods HS orchestra in early April. Born in New Jersey, Patty was elated she was able to visit Broadway and also find herself near her New Jersey birthplace. . .John (Stix) Kowalczyk, Keeper Club alumnus who has been training at Dyess Park between college graduation and the beginning of law school, saved a penalty and made other key saves as Inter won the Huntsville Soccer League men’s championship game, 5-1 in early April. “I attribute much of doing well to getting to do keeper training again,” concluded Stix. . .Longtime Keeper Club member and now Private First Class Jacob Fowler writes from Ft. Jackson, S. C., where he is undergoing basic training in the U. S. Army, that “the Keeper Club is really amazing in all it does. I plan to start playing again when I get back.”. .If you have read this far and would like a $25 gift certificate for Soccer-4-All, enter a Keeper Club drawing by emailing JWalker332@aol.com with the words “Just Say No to Goals.” A drawing will be held during the first week of summer fitness and you don’t have to be present to win. . .If you have items for Keeper! or KeeperTalk, please email JWalker332@aol.com or call 281-217-1612.

TIP(S) OF THE MONTH
A few Keeper Club reminders:
. . .Work to become perfect within your range. Catch and hold in your immediate range, block or parry when you can't catch in your extended range, don’t fail to go after every ball.
. . .Good players practice until they get it right; great players practice until they never get it wrong.
. . .Never turn your back to the ball.
. . .Do the Veronica stretch until you can do it like Veronica
. . .Do Patty Cake ball work until you can do it like Patty
. . .Do your very best on the Keeper’s Dozen, whether you’re saving or shooting. It is a technique test, an opportunity to put your training to work.
. . .Warming up is important, and include ballwork to reconfirm things you already know how to do. Warm up slowly and correctly, focusing on technique.
. . .Make sure your warmup includes getting on the ground, 30 times minimum

KEEPING SECRETS
Don’t catch a throw-in from your teammate. Not so many years ago, it was common practice for players to make throw-ins to their own goalkeeper. The law was changed and goalkeepers can no longer catch the ball, but must play a throw-in like other players. If the goalkeeper touches a throw-in with his or her hands, the result is an indirect free kick for the opposing team.
