SUMMER GOALKEEPER CAMP
The Dynamos Keeper Club’s Summer Goalkeeper Camp prepares young goalkeepers for the next step in their soccer experience, whether it is a recreational, competitive, high school or college team. For more than 20 years, it’s been one of the best around for boys and girls who want to learn and hone their skills under experienced trainers--three hours a day, for three days, under the eyes of camp director Jim Walker and veteran goalkeeper instructors like Brandon Renken, Heather Koudelka, and other special guests. It’s intense and sweat-producing, but fun, too, with daily drawings and a Pizza-Powerade party at the end. This year’s camp, for the first time in many years, will be separate from the Dynamos Select Camp. It is scheduled at Dyess Park for August 17-19, 5pm until 8pm each day. Fee for Keeper Camp is $150, with a $50 discount for Keeper Club members. If you’re a goalkeeper nine to 18 years of age, this is where you need to be! Beginners are welcome, too, and will receive special attention from the staff. Check out more information, and register at www.dynamossoccer.com. For more information, email JWalker@dynamossoccer.com or phone 281-217-1612.

TEEN ON A MISSION
Departing Dyess Park after Tuesday fitness training, Coach Walker noticed a car parked along Kitzman Road. He slowed down to see if the motorist was having trouble, but noticed one of his trainees, a high schooler, up ahead, turning to walk on Telge Road. Since the lady in the car was on a cell phone with her window up, and he thought she waved, he decided to keep going. He proceeded to the stop sign and, after hanging a left on Telge, caught up to the teen, walking in tall weeds along the fence. Rolling his window down, he called to the player, who responded with a wave and assured there was no problem. On Thursday, the coach asked the young man why he had been walking along the fence while his mom waited in their car. With a wry smile, Will Rossiter replied: “You ever heard of Pokemon Go?”

KeeperTalk
A hearty welcome to Eddie Bloise, who joins Roland Sikinger and Jim Walker this fall as a Keeper Club trainer. Eddie, a Dynamos staff trainer who will oversee keeper sessions on Tuesdays this fall, played as a pro with the Argentine club Racing de Cordoba, also is head boys coach at Katy HS.. . .Brandon Renken, a hard-working attorney, and Dr. Heather Koudelka make time every summer to lend a hand at the annual Keeper Club Camp. This year is no exception as both have emailed “can’t wait!” for this year’s three-day encampment (August 17-19) at Dyess Park. They contribute lots of experience and wisdom (both still play in adult leagues after notable high school and collegiate careers) to our camps. Also assisting at Summer Goalkeeper Camp will be Kacie Paine, who a few days later will report back to Texas A&M where she plans to try out for the university’s club team. . .At Dr. Joe Machnik’s No. 1 Goalkeeper Camp in Kerrville in June, Keeper Club member Alli Thompson was awarded Junior Goalkeeper (10-13 years old) Save of the Week on the final day. Alli attended with Dynamos U12 Silver teammates Addison Meredith and Isabella Hodges, who took part in the No. 1 Striker Camp. . .Mya Trager, a regular at the Summer Conditioning and Technical Program, was absent for several sessions, not resting, but off to Montgomery, Ala., to train with the South Texas Olympic Development Program team. While there, she contributed to a 3-0 victory over Tennessee in a friendly by assisting on a goal and making a big-time defensive save to protect the shutout. You can check out Mya’s own words about her trip in the July 22 Coaches Memo on this website. . .Dynamos U17’s Maddie Saucedo was named Most Valuable Goalkeeper at the Texas State University summer camp in late July. . .Jonathan Kauffman, who attended the Keeper Club’s Summer Conditioning and Technical Program for a number of years and holds the record for completing the most 70s, visited the current group July 7 and directed a keeper session. . .Hope Solo collected her 100th international shutout July 9 when the U. S. Women’s national team edged South Africa, 1-0, at Chicago’s Soldier Field. It was the 150th international victory in 16 years for the goalkeeper, who turned 35 on July 30. . . Answer to the Keeper! quiz question for July was “D ‘n A” as the Keeper Club’s description for punting distance and accuracy. Winner of the drawing from those who replied with the correct answer is Emily Ramcharon, a field player attending the Summer Fitness Program. . .Keepers and field players attending the Summer Fitness Program are eligible for the August quiz drawing, too, if they email the answer to this question (answer available elsewhere in this newsletter):Who is the newest goalkeeper trainer for the Keeper Club? Send your answer to jwalker@dynamossoccer.com for entry in the August drawing for a $25 gift card. . .If you have news items, photos, anecdotes, or tips on goalkeeping, please send to jwalker@dynamossoccer.com

Keeper Club member and Dynamos player Alli Thompson was honored at the end of Joe Machnik's No. 1 goalkeeper camp in Kerrville in June with the Save of the Week.

KeeperAugust 2016 Daniel Adams
Longtime Keeper Club member Daniel Adams (right), now a professional fisherman, poses with his friend, Bobby Hill, and a 100-plus pound saltwater alligator gar that together they hauled in after a 30-minute battle in the San Jacinto River last week. "I caught it on a 12-pound test line and light action rod," said Daniel. "It was a team effort for sure. I couldn't have landed it without my friend Bobby being there."

QUOTABLE
“Only those who will risk going too far can possibly know how far they can go.”--T. S. Eliot (Tommy must have come up with this one while learning to extend his diving).

TIP OF THE MONTH
“At a young age you’ll make a lot of mistakes–-but that’s good because you learn from mistakes in a game. Mistakes in training don’t really count, because there are no consequences. It’s important for young goalkeepers to get in as many game-like situations as possible. Training is good, but game situations are more important.”—Tim Howard

KEEPING SECRETS
Take care of your gloves. This seems like an overload, but in reality you should wash your gloves in soapy water as often as you can, after every training session and every game if possible. Wring them out and hang them to dry. . .do NOT put in a washing machine or dryer. Also, rather than spitting on your gloves to improve the grip, carry an extra bottle of water to games or training just for the palms of your gloves. Gloves can be expensive, so make them last!
